7 Wonders of the World
INTRODUCTION
7 Wonders of the World was a campaign started in 2000 to
choose the Wonders of the World. It is the first known list of the most
remarkable man-made creations of classical antiquity. They are selected from
almost 200 man-made monuments. The historian HERODOTUS and the scholar
CALLIMACHUS of Cyrene at the museum of ALEXANDRIA made an early list of seven
Wonders.
WONDERS
The following list of the Seven Wonders of the World are:
1. GREAT WALL OF CHINA
2. PETRA
3. COLOSSEUM
4. CHICHEN ITZA
5. MACHU PICCHU
6. TAJ MAHAL
7. GREAT PYRAMID OF
GIZA
THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA
The Great Wall of China is located in China. It is one of
the longest walls in the world. It was built to prevent invasion and protect
the Silk Road trade. This majestic wall was built after wisdom, dedication,
blood, sweat, and tears. It means this wall was built after many sacrifices.
The height of the Great Wall is 5-8 meters (16-26 feet).
PETRA
Petra is an ancient city that lies in present-day Jordon
and dates back to the fourth century B.C. It has also been referred to as “Rose
City” due to the color of the stones used in its buildings. Petra is located
about 150 miles south of both Jerusalem and Amman.
COLOSSEUM
Colosseum is the largest amphitheater built during the
Roman Empire it is located in Rome, Italy. It is the most famous monument in
Rome and is known as “COLOSSEUM” or “COLISEUM”. The Roman Colosseum is one of
the most imposing ancient structures. It was built between A.D 70 and 72.
CHICHEN ITZA
CHICHEN ITZA is the largest of the archaeological cities
of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It
is located about 120 miles from the modern-day resort town of Cancun. It is
built by the Maya people.
MACHU PICCHU
Machu Picchu, an Incan city of sparkling granite
precariously perched between 2 towering Andean peaks. It was built at the peak
of the Incan Empire in the mid-1400s. This site can only be reached by foot,
train, or helicopter.
TAJ MAHAL
The Taj Mahal is an enormous mausoleum complex
commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of
his beloved wife. It was constructed over 20 years on the southern bank of the
Yamuna River in Agra, India. It is an ivory-white mausoleum. Taj Mahal was
invented by Ustad Ahmed Lahori. Shah Jahan is buried in the Taj Mahal.
GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA
The great pyramid of Giza is a defining symbol of Egypt
and the last of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. It is also named as the
Pyramid of Khufu. It is located in Cairo, Egypt. It is the oldest and largest
pyramids in the Giza pyramid.
